Damien Hirst collaborated with English chef, Mark Hix to create the restaurant, Pharmacy 2. It is a themed restaurant where you can find items from Damien Hirst’s most famous collections: “Butterfly kaleidoscope” and “Medicine cabinet”. The restaurant is at Newport Street Gallery in London. It welcomed its first customers in February, 2016. The name of this establishment is to a nod to a previous restaurant of Hirst’s: the “Pharmacy restaurant and bar” which was open from 1998 to 2003.
The white floor and ceiling, metal walls and bar, and the lighting immerse customers in a sterile, medical universe. The tables, coloured furniture, illustrations on the glass resembling DNA molecular structures, and photos on the counter depicting tablets and capsules add colour to the restaurant. To reaffirm the pharmaceutical theme, the walls are covered in wallpaper featuring a wall chart of pills.
The Newport Street Gallery is the work of Hirst driven by his desire to share his collections of contemporary art with the public. The gallery displays the work of others artists and the restaurant gives visitors the opportunity to see Hirst’s works. The objects they create have a clear link with the field of medicine, a symbol of his keen interest in the sciences.
Hirst explains, “This restaurant combines two of my greatest passions: art and food”. Hirst and Hix know each other well as they have worked together on other projects. The traditional British and European dishes served in this restaurant reflect their joint love of fresh, high quality ingredients.
So, would you like to be “treated” in this original restaurant?
