Pour concevoir le propos\u00a0 entre art et sciences, le mus\u00e9e s\u2019est associ\u00e9 avec le Mus\u00e9um National d\u2019Histoire naturelle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La pr\u00e9sentation est chronologique: elle est organis\u00e9e autour de dix p\u00e9riodes, de la\u00a0 R\u00e9volution \u00e0 la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. La nature est alors une cr\u00e9ation divine. Dieu a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 le monde et les\u00a0 hommes \u00e0 son image, en six jours. La nature est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un jardin cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour\u00a0 l\u2019homme. Les animaux et les plantes sont d\u00e9crits tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans des\u00a0 trait\u00e9s illustr\u00e9s. Les cabinets de curiosit\u00e9 permettent d\u2019exposer des objets naturels aux\u00a0 formes stup\u00e9fiantes ou au contraire des objets composites cr\u00e9\u00e9s par l\u2019homme pour\u00a0 \u00e9merveiller et \u00e9tonner. Des exp\u00e9ditions hors des fronti\u00e8res europ\u00e9ennes, permettent de\u00a0 ramener des esp\u00e8ces inconnues jusqu\u2019alors. Les princes s\u2019enorgueillissent de leur\u00a0 m\u00e9nagerie et rivalisent pour faire venir et acclimater des esp\u00e8ces rares. Des naturalistes et\u00a0 des artistes sont envoy\u00e9s d\u00e9couvrir les nouveaux territoires, en Australie et en Am\u00e9rique\u00a0 du Sud notamment. Les artistes, tels que Delacroix ou Barye saisissent\u00a0 cette opportunit\u00e9 pour observer les f\u00e9lins. Leur approche naturaliste et notamment leur\u00a0 attention aux expressions des animaux placent la peinture animali\u00e8re au m\u00eame niveau\u00a0 d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat que la peinture d\u2019Histoire. Les an\u00e9mones, coraux et tous les invert\u00e9br\u00e9s marins font l\u2019objet d\u2019\u00e9tudes. C\u2019est \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque\u00a0 que l\u2019aquarium est invent\u00e9 et vite popularis\u00e9 dans les maisons victoriennes. Londres, Paris,\u00a0 New York, Berlin inaugurent leur aquarium public. L\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019un monde fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 par des centaines de milliers\u00a0 d\u2019ann\u00e9es s\u2019impose petit \u00e0 petit par les progr\u00e8s de la g\u00e9ologie et remplace l\u2019image d\u2019un\u00a0 monde cr\u00e9\u00e9 en six jours comme dans la Bible. Les glaciers et les volcans font l\u2019objet\u00a0 d\u2019attentions et d\u2019\u00e9tudes. Avec l\u2019analyse approfondie des fossiles, c\u2019est l\u2019id\u00e9e des esp\u00e8ces\u00a0 fig\u00e9es dans le temps depuis leur cr\u00e9ation qui est remise en question. Les scientifiques\u00a0 s\u2019interrogent sur les extinctions en raison de catastrophes ou des \u00e9volutions graduelles. Les\u00a0 dinosaures \u00e9merveillent et stimulent l\u2019imagination des artistes \u00e0 la recherche de la\u00a0 repr\u00e9sentation ad\u00e9quate. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0\u00a0 pr\u00e9sent le vivant \u00e9tait class\u00e9 selon une hi\u00e9rarchie qui allait de l\u2019inorganique \u00e0 Dieu en\u00a0 passant par l\u2019Homme \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelon le plus \u00e9lev\u00e9. L\u2019anciennet\u00e9 du monde, la prise de\u00a0 conscience du nombre \u00e9lev\u00e9 d\u2019esp\u00e8ces et leur r\u00e9partition g\u00e9ographique ouvrent la voie \u00e0\u00a0 l\u2019\u00e9volutionnisme. La vision d\u2019une g\u00e9n\u00e9alogie commune aux esp\u00e8ces \u00e9merge. Cependant les\u00a0 raisonnements divergent. Ainsi Lamarck estime que les esp\u00e8ces se sont adapt\u00e9es en\u00a0 permanence \u00e0 leur milieu. Darwin et Russel Wallace pensent que la s\u00e9lection naturelle est\u00a0 le ressort primordial de l\u2019\u00e9volution. Darwin va plus loin et observe la mise en place de\u00a0 caract\u00e9ristiques propres \u00e0 s\u00e9duire pour s\u2019assurer de transmettre ses g\u00e8nes. Il attache\u00a0 beaucoup d\u2019importance aux plumes de paon qui n\u2019ont aucune utilit\u00e9, si ce n\u2019est celle de\u00a0 plaire \u00e0 un potentiel partenaire et ainsi d\u2019assurer sa descendance. L\u2019engouement pour ses\u00a0 th\u00e9ories popularise le motif de plume de paon. Elle passionne autant les scientifiques\u00a0 que les \u00e9crivains et les artistes. Freud et ses suiveurs font le rapprochement entre la nostalgie de l\u2019ut\u00e9rus maternel et celui d\u2019une forme de vie embryonnaire archa\u00efque. Notre\u00a0 pulsion de mort s\u2019expliquerait par une volont\u00e9 de retrouver la paix de ce monde\u00a0 inorganique.
